BRIEF

Kia was entering an entirely new business territory — purpose-built electric commercial vehicles designed for B2B and B2C mobility at scale. The category itself was being defined in real time: traditional LCV manufacturers like Ford, Renault, and Volkswagen on one side; an emerging wave of autonomous and EV-focused startups on the other. The challenge wasn't simply to brand a new product line — it was to define what Kia's PBV offer actually meant, where it sat in a rapidly shifting competitive landscape, and how to structure a brand architecture that could carry an entirely new business unit without diluting the parent brand or disappearing beneath it. Every decision — from the brand's relationship to the Kia masterbrand to the naming system for vehicles, services, and solutions — had downstream consequences for Kia's business structure, go-to-market strategy, and long-term portfolio logic.

SOLUTION

The core strategic move was a conceptual redefinition: reframing PBV from "Purpose Built Vehicle" — a generic category descriptor owned by no one — to "Platform Beyond Vehicle," a forward-looking concept Kia could claim as its own. This repositioned Kia not as a late entrant to a crowded commercial vehicle market, but as the originator of a new mobility category.

Brand architecture was resolved as a Masterbrand + Business Identifier model (Kia PBV), giving PBV a distinct but coherent presence within Kia's wider portfolio. A naming guidelines document was developed to cover the full scope of the business — from the business unit and vehicle series to services and solutions. The brand launched at CES 2024 with the Concept PV5, alongside partnership announcements with Uber, Coupang, DHL, and Delivery Hero.
