BRIEF

HiteJinro had been losing ground to Cass for years — market share declining from the high 30s to around 21% with no recovery in sight. Previous attempts to revive the Hite brand had all failed because they competed on Cass's terms. The deeper problem wasn't the product; it was the category. Korean domestic beer was broadly perceived as bland and watery, and as long as HiteJinro fought within that perception, Cass would keep winning. The brief wasn't to revive Hite. It was to retire it, and build something new that could redefine what Korean beer is.

SOLUTION

The strategic move was to reframe the category around natural authenticity — a position no competitor owned. The concept, Organically Essential, carved out a sweet spot between mass-accessible and genuinely natural. The name Terra - Latin for earth, land, and soil — carried layered resonance: Australian Golden Triangle malt provenance, phonetics that signal "beerness," and a timely response to Korean consumers' desire for something purer. The Hite name was retired from beer products entirely, clearing the slate. The green bottle broke the market's most entrenched convention — domestic Korean beer had always come in brown. Supported by 200+ bottle studies and user scenario design, the green was argued and evidenced as the right call. Terra launched in March 2019 and sold one million cases in 39 days — the fastest in Korean beer history.
