SOLUTION
Paper models and origami studies led to a twisted structure that distributes vertical load into lateral forces — a geometry that multiplies the structural capacity of any sheet material. The hide was soaked, shaped around this geometry using custom-built clamps, and left to dry for 24 hours. The finished chair supports 70kg comfortably.
Honestly assessed: the geometric logic of the twisted structure came from outside the material. But the way that structure actually works involved the leather's own properties. When weight is applied, the chair compresses and the twist deepens — this intensified torsion distributes the load laterally with greater force, allowing the structure to hold. When the person stands, the leather's shape recovery brings the chair back to its original form. The form is not static — the material responds to load, and the structure works actively as a result.
The twisted structure is not leather-specific — rigid polymers like polypropylene share the elastic recovery properties that make this geometry work under load. What leather brings is different. No injection moulding, no tooling, no industrial setup — a hide soaked, shaped, and dried is the entire process. And each hide is different: the grain, the variation in thickness, the way it ages with use and takes on the marks of whoever sits in it. No two chairs are identical, and the chair changes over time in a way no polymer ever does. Every object made this way becomes, eventually, a record of whoever used it — which is a kind of value mass production cannot manufacture.
This is the most interesting point the experiment reached. The material did not determine the form, but the material's properties made the structure alive. The way leather responds to load — compressing under weight, the twist deepening, then recovering when released — this behaviour itself, translated into a design language, remains unexplored. The moment where a material's behaviour becomes structure and experience is still open territory.
