SYTH, What if paper was the digital interface?

BRIEF

In 2015, researchers were documenting a phenomenon they called Digital Dementia — measurable deactivation of brain regions associated with deep thinking, planning, and contemplation in people with sustained digital device use. The prefrontal cortex, responsible for fast reactive processing, was becoming dominant whilst slower, reflective cognition atrophied. The obvious response — use digital less — was not a viable answer, not for how work, learning, and communication actually happen. The design challenge was to invert the question: rather than reducing digital use, redesign the interface so that the cognitive depth of analogue thinking is preserved within it.

SOLUTION

Most digital interfaces demand adaptation — you learn their shortcuts, file structures, and logic. SYTH reversed this relationship. Rather than digitising handwriting, it used handwriting as a command language for digital space: writing a keyword triggers a live search; sketching an app name opens it; drawing a mind map assembles a dynamic workspace on screen around it. The system learns your language. The digital environment assembles itself around the act of writing.

The pen captures motion and stroke data as you write, transmitting it wirelessly to platform software that parses the input — identifying keywords, shapes, and commands — and executes the corresponding digital action. Each mark is saved both locally and synced to cloud storage, making the physical record a persistent pointer to digital work.

SYTH was conceived in 2015 — before voice assistants went mainstream, before large language models existed. The concern was already legible then: as digital tools take over what the brain used to do, the capacity for deep thinking, planning, and reflection diminishes. A decade later, with AI automating not just memory retrieval but reasoning, writing, and decision-making, the provocation SYTH raised has only become more urgent.
